The sun beamed over the field, not a cloud in the sky. Passing through the Anthony Dwyer arch, Sewanhaka’s football field was filled with our school’s athletes. From seventh graders on the Junior High soccer teams to Seniors on the Varsity football team, the field was alive with excitement, bubbling with anticipation, and warmed with nostalgia.
Performances by the Twirlers and Rockettes dazzled the crowds with their riveting takes on classics. The Marching Band livened the crowd with their renditions of Gaga’s Bad Romance and Beyoncé’s Crazy in Love. Mr. Reece’s voice cloaked the crowds, amplified from his familiar seat in the press box.
The Friday afternoon pep rally is a staple of our school spirit, bolstering Sewanhaka’s athletes for the following Homecoming game. But these two periods were always so much more than “pep.” It’s the first welcoming experience for some of our new members of Sewanhaka’s family in seventh grade. And for many, it was their final pep rally, many of whom have found a family and community on that very field for the past few years.
Highlights of the beautiful day also included the crowning of the Class of 2026’s Homecoming Royalty, Eve Guardino and Tamia Williams, and a very special appearance by five of Sewanhaka’s staff members for a 50-yard dash, donning very unconventional garb. More about the teachers’ dash to come!
