Now that winter is here, fall sports are officially over. That being said, within this article I’ll be giving an insider view of Sewanhaka’s varsity soccer team from the perspectives of the team’s manager as well as one of the team’s top players.
This season was one of character development and growth. Although they had only had one win out of 12 matches in the season, there were highlights and numerous signs of positive growth. The team’s lone victory came against Hewlett High School, by a score of 3-2.
This year’s team manager was junior Rashid Pinckney. Rashid is normally a starting player, but spent the season injured and unable to play. According to Rashid, one of the team’s struggles came from being unable to build momentum. He explained that the team members struggled to stay motivated after tough losses, which impacted the way they practiced and played in games following losses.
Junior Olwasemileniola Ojo, one of the team’s players, as well as honorary captain due to team circumstances, believes the team could benefit from improving communication on and off the field.
While the season performance wasn’t the best this year however, the team showed the ability to improve. Both players mentioned that the team’s skill has gotten a lot better than at the beginning of the year, and the relationship between the players created strong bonds between them. The team was still able to have fun together during games, and outside of practice as well, showcasing that there was good energy amongst the team, which is a stepping stone for improvement next season.
