It’s officially that time of year! As the winter continues to approach at a steadfast pace, the fall season of sports is coming to a close. In this piece, I’ll be giving you an insider view of Sewanhaka’s beloved varsity football team, coached by Mr. Kasimatis, Mr. McRae and Mr. Caputo.
When I spoke to Coach Kasimatis, he expressed that “…the season could have gone better in terms of wins and losses… [but] I’m hoping that the kids enjoyed themselves and learned something from us coaches.” At face value, yeah, our current record of 2-7 doesn’t sound the best, but the experience gained by our athletes is undeniable.
Senior Captain Adrian Ayau provided his insight into this. “The season didn’t go as planned, but we came to work everyday and never gave up. We always fought until the final whistle.” He also added, “The amount of talent, heart, and resilience contained within this team shows that the future is very bright.”
Junior Mahmood Kamal also shared similar thoughts. “The season didn’t go the way we wanted, but it’s all part of the process. We’ve got a lot of young guys on the team, and this year was a big learning experience. I think it just showed how much potential we have and how bright the future looks.”
I’d also like to say; while attending the annual homecoming game, I got a firsthand glimpse into the fight inside of our players. The ambience was exhilarating. The bleachers were packed, the crowd was screaming, the cheerleaders were cheering, Mr. Reece was commentating, and best of all, our team received a hard-fought victory. They radiated aura, and seeing them play their absolute hearts out is an experience I’ll never forget.
Additionally, Senior Captain Ephraim Bolouvi had a couple of words for the underclassmen, “As the season ends, remember that every challenge you faced made you stronger, and every victory, no matter how small, is a step toward greatness.”
If you’ve ever been in Ms. Pantorno’s room, it’s likely you’ve seen a poster at the front with a quote that reads, “Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in getting up every time we fall.” While I often used this to justify my shortcomings in AP World, I’d like to point out how well it applies to our football team. They’ve lived by this principle. Even in the face of adversity, they’ve pushed through.
Ravens are resilient, and our football team has shown it.
